  • The HMS Surprise was made famous by Patrick O’Brian, in his books on the adventures of Captain Aubrey and the surgeon Maturin, and in the movie Master and Commander. This frigate was built as L’Unite in 1794. It was a 24-gun corvette, armed with 8lb long guns. The British captured her in April 1796 in the Mediterranean, and changed her name to HMS Surprise. She was re-armed and classed as a 28-gun ship (actually had 24 32lb carronades on her main deck, 8 32 lb carronades on her quarter deck, and 4 6 lb long guns on her foredeck). The French frigates were much sought after by the British, because of their manoeuvrability and speed. The streamlined design of the hull below the waterline meant that these frigates could outrun most other ships. Her big moment came in October 1799, under the command of Captain Edward Hamilton for the daring rescue of the frigate Hermoine. The latter’s crew had mutinied, killing their commander and officers. The ship surrendered to the Spanish, and was taken to the harbor at Puerto Cabello in modern day Venezuela. In trying to rescue the ship, the boats of the Surprise were spotted and fired on by patrolling gun boats. They sailed forward, boarded the Hermoine, cleared the deck and sailed her out. Their losses were 12 wounded, whilst the Spanish suffered a loss of 216 wounded (including many dead). Captain Hamilton who led the rescue was knighted for his conduct, and the Hermoine restored to the British Navy. : A1603C:

  • On October 21, 1805, one of the most momentous battles in European history began off Cape Trafalgar, Spain. The HMS Victory, led by Lord Horatio Nelson, defeated the Napoleon-led armada of French and Spanish ships as they attempted to invade England. At the head of the British column, Nelson's flagship, the HMS Victory, sailed directly into the center of the Napoleon-led fleet to cut it in two. Her steering was disabled, her sails were full of holes, and she was partially dismasted, but Victory came straight on. Only then did Nelson give the order to open fire while turning to run down the line of the French formation. Victory slashed through the enemy's line of ships, taking great punishment, but leaving disaster in her wake. While Lord Horatio Nelson was mortally wounded, he was informed that he led them to a great victory, with 25 enemy ships already captured or sunk.: A0104:

  • To build this ship, extensive research was done using various sources such as museums, drawings, copies of original plans and photos of the actual ship. On October 21, 1805, one of the most momentous battles in European history began off Cape Trafalgar, Spain. Napoleon was determined upon invasion of England and he ordered the 33 heavily-gunned ships of France and Spain to confront the 27 ships of British fleet commanded by Lord Horatio Nelson.

At the head of the British column, Nelson's flagship, HMS Victory, sailed directly into the center of the combined fleet to cut it in two, holding fire to conserve ammunition. Her steering was disabled, her sails were full of holes, and she was partially dismasted, but Victory came straight on. Only then did Nelson give the order to open fire while turning to run down the line of the French formation.

HMS Victory slashed through the enemy's line of ships, taking great punishment, but leaving disaster in her wake. At one point she was locked alongside the French flagship, Redoubtable, with both ships pouring volleys of 32 lb. cannon shot into each other. Sharpshooters were picking off crewmen on deck while marines used grappling hooks to climb over the sides. Nelson, waving his sword, was struck by a musketball in the back. Mortally wounded, he was informed that he had won a great victory, with 25 enemy ships already captured or sunk.

Commissioned in 1778, HMS Victory had almost 30 years hard service under her keel at the time of Trafalgar. Yet she remained a fearsome fighting machine. She commanded the power of 102 cannon lining three decks. In a single devastating broadside, she could fire half a ton of iron shot more than a mile to smash through two feet of solid oak. She was a veteran of many hard fought naval battles.

HMS Victory displaced over 3500 tons and measure 226 feet in length and 51 feet abeam. It took 2500 prime oak trees to plank her sides and deck. Her hull was sheathed in copper to guard against barnacles. In a stiff breeze, carrying 36 sails totaling four acres of canvass, she could plough the waves at 10 knots. Fair weather or foul, the Victory was a fortress city, stocked with 35 tons of powder and 120 tons of shot. She possessed the endurance to remain at sea for up to six months at a time.

Honored and preserved over the years, HMS Victory rests now at Portsmouth, England, a never-to-be-forgotten symbol of loyalty, courage, and devotion to duty. : A0101-SE:

  • To build this ship, extensive research was done using various sources such as museums, drawings and copies of original plans. The Prince, launched at Chatham in 1670, was one of the finest English 1st rate ships of the seventeenth century. She was a successor to the famous Royal Sovereign and was designed by Phineas Pett the younger who had worked with his father on the construction of the Royal Sovereign. She was a large ship, with a burden of 1,463 tons and a keel length of 131 feet (39.93m). She carried a wartime complement of 780 men and was armed with 100 guns, ranging from the 42 pdr. (19.05kg) cannon on the lower gun deck to the 3 pdrs. The service career of the Prince began in 1672 when she carried the flag of the Duke of York, then Lord High Admiral of England and later King James II at the battle of Solebay, in the Third Dutch war. The battle ended in an English victory but in the action the Prince was so badly damaged that the Duke temporarily shifted his flag. The Captain of the Fleet, Sir John Cox, was killed on board in the course of the engagement. The Prince survived until 1692 when she was broken up and as much of her timber as could be salvaged was used in the building of the Royal William.: A0602:
