The concept of a secretary desk began as portable writing desks placed on tables or chests, allowing a comfortable height for a working surface. Later a base with the writing table were designed with a superstructure, often referrd to as a bookcase, to hold books and documents which resulted in one of the most decorative masterpieces of furniture.
Secretary desks are still popular today, whether it is an antique, fine reproduction or a newly designed modern piece of furniture.
